Personal Assessment

My persuasive speech is the last requirement for English Two that’s why I made sure that it is better than my Informative Speech.  I chose fastfood as my topic because I’m really interested to it and I love food.  Coming up with a persuasive speech is very challenging for me because I need to consider several factors so that my speech will be effective to persuade the audience. Also, there are certain rubrics that should be followed in making the outline.

At the day of my speech, I’m quite nervous and at the same time, excited, because it is my last speech in this subject. I always think that I must be more confident this time because it’s my second time to deliver a speech in front of many people. I felt relieved after my speech and I was also very happy because I have survived this. I think I’m more confident this time than my first speech because I have already an experience on how to speak in front of an audience. Now, I’m more willing to share my knowledge and to persuade my audience. I hope that my skills in public speaking will continue to improve.

Preparedness is very important in the success of a public speaking performance because it will serve as the whole content of your speech. It will determine your credibility about the topic that you chose because all that you do will reflect on you. Organizing your thoughts about your topic is a must so that your speech will be understandable. For me, rehearsing the speech before hand is very helpful because you can adjust and see where your mistakes are. In that case, your speech will be better. Based from my experience, I made sure that my sources are credible and I only chose those references which are really needed and related in my topic.

Here are my personal resolutions related to improving my public speaking or communication skills:

  • ·       First, be sure of your topic. The topic that you will choose is the foundation of your speech because it’s the thing that you will be talking about. Make sure that you are comfortable with the topic that you chose and you like it. Like me, I chose the topic that I’m interested and I can say that I delivered it enough for the audience to understand it.
  • ·        Second, make enough time to prepare/do your speech and follow the needed instructions. As I have said earlier, preparedness is the key to your success.
  • ·    Lastly, trust yourself. Don’t be a pessimist because it will affect in the delivery of your speech. Always think that you can overcome this and think that whatever you do in your speech will reflect on your grade.

I’ll try my best to start with my speech two weeks before the actual presentation so that I can I will have enough time to prepare. Also, I will be more considerate when it comes to choosing my resources. I will first rely on books than internet sites. I will also lessen my cue cards so that I will not completely rely on that because it will result in just reading it. I hope that I will be successful in doing these things.

FASTFOOD CHAINS THREATENED OUR CULTURE

PERSUASIVE SPEECH OBJECTIVE:
I would like to encourage my fellow food lovers to be more aware of how fastfood chains affect our culture.
INTRODUCTION:
Fast food chains here in the Philippines are like mushrooms, popping out from different places. They are very popular nowadays because of their mouth-watering food and their fast service. It is part of every family’s bonding time during weekend. Our trip is not complete when we don’t pass by a fast food chain to eat our favorite food. In fact, children nowadays are very familiar with the food that most of the fast food chains are offering. Fast food is affordable and less time consuming but there are certain factors that causes a threat to the Philippine culture. Fast food chains may be beneficial to people but it can also be the reason to the weakening of our culture.

BODY
NEED:
I.                    Factors about fastfood chains that affect our culture.
            A.  Most of the fastfood chains originated in America.
1. McDonald’s started when Ray Kroc bought the franchise of a small burger joint owned by Dick and Mac McDonald, and opened his first restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois in 1955.
2. In 1958, two enterprising college students, Frank and Dan Carney, opened a small pizza restaurant, which they called Pizza Hut, in their hometown in Wichita, Kansas.
3. Another fast food chain emerged in 1937, when Vernon Rudolph opened his own doughnut shop in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, called Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.
            B.  Even in fastfood chains, the English language is more dominant than our language.
1. Language is the most important channel for communication and a medium for determining the values of a society (Panopio, Rolda 60).
          C. Native Filipino dishes are forgotten because of the fast growing food chains in our country.
1. Fastfood chains became an everyday meal for most of the Filipinos.
             D.  Filipino family bonding time is affected by these fast food chains.
1. To some families, dinner time provides the forum where members discuss activities and problems of the day. But working parents may not find time to eat dinner at home, particularly during the weekday. The children then eat by themselves, as household helpers reheat leftovers or buy food from fast food chains (Panopio, Rolda 170).

SATISFACTION:
II.                 There are simple things that we can do.
            A. Learn how to cook your own food at home.
           B. Try to eat from different Filipino restaurants like Mang Inasal, Kanin Club, Cabalen, Ilonggo Grill, and others.
                       C. Lesser consumption of these foods can decrease the risk of getting health problems.
            D.You can save money.

VISUALIZATION:
III.  We can visualize the benefits of avoiding fastfood chains by giving the results of doing it.
        A. We can live a healthy lifestyle.
        B. Our money will be spent wisely based on our needs.

CONCLUSION:
Fast food chains can benefit a lot of people in some way, but they should also consider the factors that will be affected by these fast food chains. We should restore our culture through simple things like eating our native dishes. Make time to plan for your weekly meals so that the food that you eat will be balanced. Also, this is the best time that you should learn how to cook for yourself. It's better if the food that you will is prepared by you. Learning how to cook is a good skill especially when your parents are always busy. Filipinos should appreciate the richness of their culture and learn how to spread and be proud of it. According to a website, people should make their culture better. Instead of being influenced by others, Filipinos should be able to show more of their irreplaceable culture because it is their identity that they are really Filipinos.

Reaction about the Informative Speech

My informative speech is about Table Tennis. On the day of the speech, I felt nervous already because I’m not used in speaking in public. I’m the third speaker so I have plenty of time to prepare. When the second speaker was about to end, that’s the time that I felt really nervous. My hands are shaking and sweating. When I came in front of the class, I managed to think of the positive things. I always think that I can do it because my classmates have done it already. When I was starting my speech, my voice is a bit awkward because of the nervousness that I’m experiencing but as I continue my speech, I felt a bit comfortable about it. In my speech, I try to panic sometimes especially when I’m having technical difficulties or about my powerpoint. As I am going through my speech, my nervousness lessened. I observed that my classmates are quiet and I think they enjoyed my powerpoint because it has a lot of pictures. My classmates helped me to overcome my fear because I’ve seen them listening and paying attention to what I am speaking even if it is a bit boring.

In my persuasive speech, I will try my best to lessen my readings in front of the class. I will organize my outline well so that I will not have a problem in my time because in my informative speech, I consumed much time than the required time given to us. I hope that cue cards are allowed in the upcoming persuasive speech so that students, like me, will have a guide on our speeches and I think that it will help a lot for us.

The first question that I chose is from Marco Cantalejo. He wants to know the reason why red and black were the colors of the paddle. Rackets used in competition, and at many table tennis clubs, are required to have red and black rubber sheets on opposite sides. This rule was enacted to prevent players who use either two different advanced specialized rubber sheets with very different playing characteristics. This would have the effect of confusing the opponent as to which of the two radically different rubber sheets was actually used to strike the ball.

The second one is from Paul Buenvenida. He wants to know if the Philippines has its own table tennis team. The answer is yes, we have our own team in table tennis. The national table tennis team won seven gold and two silver medals in the recently concluded 2011 US Open Table Tennis Championships held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was led by South East Asian Games veteran, Richard Gonzales. He bagged 3 gold medals in different categories.

The last question that I chose is from Aubrey Tolentino. She asked me the reason why table tennis is called that way. The sport got its start in England towards the end of the 18th century when, after dinner, some upper-middle class Victorians decided to turn their dining room tables into miniature versions of the traditional lawn tennis playing field. That’s why they call it table tennis. It’s a racket sport that is played on table and is a miniature version of lawn tennis.

Informative speech and Analyzing your Audience

In my informative speech, I’d like to talk about junk foods, specifically, the benefits of junk foods. I chose this topic because I often eat junk foods. In my speech, I will talk about the benefits of it in our life, not in our health because we all know that too much junk food will not be good for us. I would like to share the things that junk foods do in our daily lifestyle. One benefit that I will tackle about junk foods is that, it saves time. I will further explain it with my speech together with the other benefits.

The audience/listeners play an important role in public speaking because they are the people whom you will be talking to and informing them about your topic. Before speaking in front of them, I have to deal with their profiles.

  • In terms of age, we all share the same level. It ranges from 16 to 19 year old students. This generation is called the modern day youth because nowadays, we experienced different high tech things like cellphones, computers, and many more. They can easily adapt to my topic because as I have said, we are from the same age.
  • The audience that I am having in my speech is college students. We are all studying in the same school. These students are a combination of Management, Communication Arts, and Engineering students.
  • The venue of our public speaking is only in the classroom so I assume that they will just sit there and listen to the speaker. Our time is at 8 in the morning so I guess that some of them are active , some are sleepy or maybe some are hungry. My topic is about food so I will make sure that they will be interested in my topic.
  • The purpose of my speech is to inform my classmates about the topic that I will use.
  • This informative speech can also be helpful to the society because it will give them knowledge about the benefits of junk foods.
The audience will have a better understanding on the benefits of eating junk foods. Junk foods have disadvantages, but in my speech, they will also realize that it has advantages. They will gain more knowledge about my topic. Informing the right things to do is a challenging task, especially when most of them are not agreeing with you, but in my part, I will try to maximize my time to prepare and to give a speech that will benefit them.

Nervousness

Nervousness is my greatest enemy in public speaking. I already expect that it would be the most common weakness of all the students. During the discussion about nervousness, I learned many things. Somehow, it helped me to have a better understanding of this emotion that I'm experiencing whenever I'm speaking in public. The discussion made me realize that I can control my nervousness. I only need to focus and be relax before my speech. After this discussion, I have come up with my personal tips on how to deal with nervousness.
  1. ALWAYS THINK POSITIVE. Don't think that you will mess up the whole speech. Always say that you can do it. Also, think that your classmates will also do the same thing.
  2. BE RELAXED, especially when you are dealing with a highly stressful activity.
  3. DON'T STRESS YOURSELF AND HAVE A PROPER DIET. Eat well and rest because it is very important to our body. When we are resting, our mind and body will be relaxed and will gain more energy for tomorrow.
  4. ALWAYS BE PREPARED. When you prepare, you will gain more confidence.
One major requirement in ENGLISH TWO is our informative speech. These are the possible topics that I want to talk about, in my informative speech.
The first topic is about the Korean culture. I would like to know why they are popular in our country, like their tv programs, fashion, music, and many more. The second possible topic is about the History of McDonald's. I chose this topic because I like to eat in fastfood chains like this. Another possible topic is all about the Philippine movies.
These topics are just some of what I'm thinking but I'm no yet decided on what I will be using in my speech. I will of another interesting topics.

Miyerkules, Agosto 17, 2011

At first, I don't have much knowledge regarding Compsci. The first thing that comes in my mind is computers, that's all. I didn't expect that there are so much things to discuss and learn about computers and its relation to the society.  Within a short period of time, I've learned and realized  so much things.
Here are some of the things that I've discovered/learned.

  •  I didn't know that desktop is also called as Fix.
  •  In order for you to know if the computer is a good investment, you must not only consider its physical appearance. You should inspect if it has a good quality processor, RAM, and hard drive. I also learned about the standard unit for it and how important they are when it comes on choosing you computer.
  • Radiation filters cannot protect you from radiation. It only helps you to  lessen the radiation in your monitor. You need a more thicker material like glass filters.
  • Monitors emit VLF or Very Low Frequency and ELF or Extremely Low Frequency.
  • Screen savers are made so that you will not display the same thing for a long time because your computer might burn in. Nowadays, screen savers  are just for entertainment. Acetate is used for black and white cellphone while wallpapers are for colored cellphone.
  • Today, technology becomes smaller. Different companies are trying to come up with a gadget that is handy and consumes less space like cellphones, computers, laptops, and more.
  • On deciding whether you will replace or repair your computer, you must consider different things. If your computer is 5 years and above, you must decide to buy a new one because if you decide to repair it, you are not sure that it will never encounter any problems again. Also, you need to first ask yourself if the problem that you are having is hardware related or software related so that you will know how much it will cost.
  • I also learned that deleted files can be recovered.
  • T avoid being hacked, don't choose the most common thing when it comes to creating your passcode like your birthday, relative names, interests because it is easy to hack. You must change your passcode often so that your account will not be easily accessed by other people.
  • Social networking sites have different advantages and disadvantages in our lives. It depends on the person on how he will protect himself.
  • Facebook is hackable. You should not reveal too much information about yourself because it will say on the internet forever. Don't post something that you will regret in the future. For example, pictures of yourself that is malicious to other people.
  • Also, social networking causes to be less in touch with friends because it is harder to relate rather than talking in person. It can also cause misunderstandings among your friends. For example, you post a quote to your friend, then your friend misunderstood it, you will probably argue with one another.
I hope that I can use these new knowledge that I have learned in my daily life. =)
